In her book Prophecy, philosopher Carissa Véliz argues predictions about AI are rarely neutral — they nudge people toward desired actions. As Nigel Warburton writes in The New World: when tech leaders warn bots could overrun the internet within a year, or that AI has a 10% chance of destroying humanity in a decade, ask "why say this now?" — imminent stock launches, or showing regulators they're responsible adults? Betting everything on AI saving the world could hasten the very disaster it promises to prevent.
