If Safety Work Matters So Much, Why Isn't It Open Source?

A pointed critique: AI labs claim the moment is serious enough to sacrifice profit by slowing the frontier, yet keep their alignment and safety innovations secret. If safety work is truly that important, why not open source it and risk leaking a bit of IP in the name of a race to the top and the public good?
