Guardian: Why tech companies might be happy for us to believe AI will kill us all

The Guardian's Wednesday briefing examines the gap between AI hype and reality. Anthropic founder Dario Amodei published an essay urging tech companies to "slow" the pace of developing the most sophisticated AI models, drawing support from Elon Musk and Sam Altman. Trump, who has staked the US economy on AI, dismissed such worries as a "HOAX", insisting the only control AI needs is a "STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT".
The UK government took a more cautious stance, with first secretary of state Louise Haigh saying the UK must heed experts' warnings. The piece also questions why giant companies would claim to be building humanity-destroying tools at all — apocalyptic narratives may serve their interests. Meanwhile, Nordic startups pitch safe, useful, human-in-the-loop AI tools as EU rules loom.
