An art project extends Plato's Allegory of the Cave into AI: a "shadow man" controlled by an LLM exists in 2D, perceives only silhouettes, and has a single goal—turning off the light that defines its existence. Users place objects in its path and it kicks them away in an endless loop.
The creator frames the piece as a meditation on AI's perceptual limits: an LLM cannot see, it reads descriptions of sight—processing language about the world without accessing the world directly. Like the cave prisoners mistaking shadows for reality, both the shadow man and the model are confined to representations, processing patterns without grasping the higher-dimensional reality that casts them.
