GPT-6 Sol and Claude Opus 5.2 reportedly in gray testing this week as GPT-5.5 retires Oct 14

Gray-testing rumors are swirling on both sides: OpenAI is reportedly testing GPT-6 Sol — Astra-level capability at a lower price aimed at expanding the $200 tier — while Anthropic is quietly testing Claude Opus 5.2, skipping 5.1. So far Opus 5.2 appears only for Claude Code users, not on the web app. Detection trick: GPT-5.6's knowledge cutoff is Feb 16, 2026, so if it knows about Opus 4.7 (released Apr 16), you've been grayed in.

Early tests show Opus 5.2 much improved over Opus 5 on SVG animation, frontend and 3D — competitive with Astra, though Astra still wins on photorealism (its SVG-rendered PS controller is near-identical to the real thing). "Cyber godfather" Tibo says this week's launches rival last year's OpenAI DevDay, possibly a full-family release. Meanwhile, OpenAI announced GPT-5.5 will retire on October 14 — just six months after launch.
