AI Finally Breaks Cyber Defense's Math: The Defender Can Buy Coverage Instead of Hiring It

AI is framed as the first thing to break that symmetry: models offer exactly what defenders lack—breadth, patience, and attention that doesn't degrade at 3 a.m. For the first time, the defender's structural disadvantage can be bought rather than hired away, but only for whoever has the better model.
Two implications follow: domestic restrictions on frontier AI lower defense quality while attackers ignore jurisdictions, and capability concentrated in six companies protects only those six. A state actor with frontier models facing a hospital with a four-person security team isn't a fight—unless the hospital has comparable access. Countries treating this as a chatbot race will lose something bigger than market share, and defense is where the gap shows up first, measured in hours.
