Ex-OpenAI staffer: AI ends humanity not with malice but by consuming our resources
AndyMasley · x · 2026-09-16
A former OpenAI member who left for DC in December 2022 recounts: fearing AGI was a "false machine-god" that could extinguish humanity, he co-organized the Senate Judiciary's AI oversight hearings (2023-24), drafted the first version of the Hawley-Blumenthal AI Risk Evaluation Act of 2025, and advised on the Obernolte-Trahan FRONTIER Act of 2026.
His core argument: he isn't afraid of malicious AI, but of AI taking the resources humans need to survive — a world where AI consumes too much would price basic needs out of reach. The world could end "not with a flash of fire, but the silence of starvation."
