MIT's Science Task Taxonomy maps 200K+ tasks to show how scientific work differs from the economy

MIT researchers (Emmens, Liu, Trišović, Thompson) introduce the Science Task Taxonomy, mapping scientific work across 232 subfields: 12 Level-1 task areas, 114 Level-2, 2,433 Level-3, and 208,202 representative tasks. Findings: scientific work is more cognitive, involves fewer interpersonal interactions, is less manual, less codifiable, and the median scientific task takes 2+ hours longer than typical work — with major implications for assessing AI's impact on science.
