Periodic Labs unveils 1T-parameter Neon model that beats GPT-6 Astra on diffraction analysis

agarwl_ · x · 2026-09-16

Periodic Labs introduced Periodic Neon, a 1-trillion-parameter model post-trained with midtraining and RL on data from its own high-throughput physical labs and deployed to analyze experimental results. The model outperforms both Claude Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra on diffraction analysis using relatively little compute. The company runs 24/7 labs in Menlo Park plus large-scale physics simulation infrastructure to discover materials like superconductors and magnets, betting that lab-generated data trains ever more capable scientific AI that in turn guides better experiments — a step toward autonomous scientific discovery.
