Periodic Neon lifts XRD analysis success from 2.7% to 55.3% — a 20x jump

LiamFedus · x · 2026-09-16

Periodic Labs details how Neon was trained and evaluated: X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis normally takes scientists hours of navigating software, literature, and databases. Through midtraining and RL on lab data, Neon raised the success rate from a 2.7% baseline to 55.3% (20x) on FrontierXRD, 134 difficult internal samples, scored by an LLM-Judge ensemble (Opus 5 + GPT-5.6-Sol) calibrated against expert ratings. The model sits on a Pareto-optimal cost-performance frontier and continues showing strong scaling with additional RL.
