MIT team builds recursive meta-intelligence AI that invents its own scientific instruments

MIT's Buehler group describes "recursive meta-intelligence": an AI that creates its own scientific instruments, turns them into persistent worlds inhabited by an ecology of hundreds of AI agents, and uses those worlds to discover mechanistic principles in one of the hardest physical problems — how complex hierarchical materials evolve and fail. The system reasons over vast spaces of physical trajectories and compresses them into human-comprehensible design principles.
