China's MCV weather model hits global-first 5km resolution, 10-day forecasts in under 1 hour

China's Meteorological Administration and Sugon announced that the homegrown MCV weather-climate model achieved a milestone: global 5km-resolution, 10-day forecasts computed in under one hour—surpassing the 9km resolution of Europe's operational IFS system.

Key breakthroughs: full heterogeneous porting of dynamics, physics, and interpolation via OpenACC ("one codebase, both platforms"); system-level optimizations lifting resource utilization 10%, communication 3.7x, and I/O over 30%; and a strict binary-consistency verification pipeline ensuring zero deviation between CPU and GPU results. The work ran on Sugon 8000, the first fully domestic 100k-GPU AI cluster, online for barely a month; 3km-resolution simulation trials are already done.

Sugon 8000 also supports nearly 200 industry applications and 500+ mainstream large models, positioning heterogeneous computing as key infrastructure for AI4S.
