A drone flies on 166,700 fruit fly neurons — 25M connections, one camera
Scobleizer · x · 2026-09-15
- A drone is being flown by a full computational reconstruction of a fruit fly brain: 166,700 neurons and 25 million connections, running live.
- The entire input is one camera watching an open hand. The simulated brain reads the image and converts neural firing into throttle: open palm climbs, fist holds altitude, hand removed and the drone descends.
- The four coin-sized propellers hang off a nervous system that used to belong to an insect. The builder is honest that this is not a resurrected fly but a computational model built from real biological wiring, bridged to a homemade drone.
