Stanford's Rishi Bommasani: frontier lab hires cost AI its public discourse voices

RishiBommasani · x · 2026-09-15

Stanford researcher Rishi Bommasani, who has written extensively on the value of independent experts outside frontier labs and chose independence at great financial cost, says he nonetheless supports friends and mentees joining frontier labs as high-impact roles. But in light of 'today's events,' he highlights the consequence he finds most saddening: once enmeshed in frontier labs, these voices largely disappear from public AI discourse.

He clarifies this is distinct from open research publishing — a well-understood cost of joining a frontier lab is sacrificing the ability to speak publicly on AI.
