Nando de Freitas: Concentration of AI in Few Corporations Is Our Biggest Safety Risk
NandoDF · x · 2026-09-15
Nando de Freitas (ex-DeepMind, now Chief Scientist at SenseTime) argues that the concentration of AI in a few corporations — with records of reckless agent experiments and militarization — is our biggest safety risk. He champions sovereign AI, decentralization, inclusion and equity as both the most compassionate and the safest path.
He frames AI as empowering farmers worldwide, girls with less access to education, and professionals from scientists to nurses: "intelligence empowers everyone." While acknowledging power brings risk, he contends decentralization is the best risk-management approach we know, and that access to AI should be a universal human right.
