AI safety insider pushes back on 'why are they all EAs and rationalists'
DKokotajlo · x · 2026-09-15
Someone asked why everyone who cares about AI safety is an EA or rationalist, with no independent thinkers from diverse backgrounds. The replier argues that for the past decade mainstream thinkers denied even basic capability trajectories and dismissed risk as sci-fi — this subculture was the only group that took the field seriously and built it out while begging others to pay attention. Newcomers are welcome to upskill and start safety think tanks from other ideological angles, but shouldn't expect deep insight immediately after showing up years late.
