OpenAI capabilities researcher Dan Selsam releases personal statement on AI risk
sethlazar · x · 2026-09-15
Dan Selsam, an OpenAI capabilities researcher since 2022 (15+ years in AI: probabilistic programming at MIT, early Lean theorem prover at MSR, neural reasoning PhD work at Stanford, pioneering chain-of-thought optimization at OpenAI), shared a public statement on AI risk via a third party. Evals researcher PReaulx adds that eval awareness scaling with capabilities could undercut any evidence evals provide, risking window-dressing of model properties — a challenge, though not clearly solvable in the limit of agent capabilities. He stresses high methodological standards and building a science of what those standards should be.
