AI safety folks should care about animal welfare, alignment argument goes

A niche alignment argument: animal welfare deserves attention from the AI safety community. By sheer quantity, animals may account for most of what matters today, and decisions affecting them will increasingly be delegated to AI. Compassion toward animals — humans being animals too — should therefore be part of alignment targets.
