Musk Proposes AI Safety Peer Review: Rivals Get 1-2 Weeks Early Access Before Major Model Launches
XFreeze · x · 2026-09-15
Elon Musk laid out a practical AI safety framework: if insiders at OpenAI and Anthropic admit their own models could become dangerous, frontier companies shouldn't grade their own homework.
Key proposals:
- Frontier labs shouldn't be the sole judges of whether their models are safe to release
- Competing companies should test each other's models
- Give rival frontier companies one to two weeks of early access before a major launch, to hunt for cybersecurity risks and dangerous capabilities
He argues competitors have both the technical ability to evaluate what they're seeing and strong incentives to find flaws, with risks extending beyond bad outputs to cybersecurity, misuse, and worst-case military scenarios.
