AI Bioweapon Risk Overblown, Argues Researcher: Medicine Upside Far Outweighs Engineered Viruses

Researchers SGRodriques and DavidRBellamy argue the public is badly miscalibrated about AI designing dangerous viruses: AI-engineered bioweapons shouldn't be treated as the end of the world, and medicine's upside will far outweigh the downside. Their key argument is evolutionary: once released, an engineered virus evolves to maximize replication — becoming highly transmissible while keeping hosts alive — just like the common cold, making doomsday scenarios evolutionarily implausible.
