AI Detectors Can Find the Pattern. They Still Can't Hear the Writer.
killscar · reddit · 2026-09-15
A Reddit essay argues AI-detection culture fundamentally conflates pattern recognition with authorship:
- A score is not a chain of custody: once a percentage appears, people treat it as provenance, yet detectors only see statistical regularities—lexical tendencies, sentence predictability—never drafts, revisions, or human choices.
- The uncomfortable loop: LLMs learned coherence and elegant compression from human writing, then detectors look for those same surface features. Good writing becomes suspicious precisely because good writing was the target.
Conclusion: probability scores are being read as verdicts, and pattern detection can never substitute for provenance.
