Dave Holtz, a professor at Columbia Business School, announced he will be on leave for the 2026–2027 academic year to join OpenAI's economic research team full-time, where he will lead AGI economics research. He argues economics can help understand and shape the development of increasingly capable AI and how the economy evolves alongside it, working with chief economist Ronnie Chatterji's group. His former student Ben Manning, whose first PhD project was co-authored with Holtz, shared the news.
