Researcher argues EU could trail the frontier by months at far lower compute cost

AI researcher Elie Bakouch argues in a discussion with peers that the EU shouldn't aim to jump straight to the frontier: trailing by a few months would require far less compute, putting Europe in a much better position than today.

He concedes nobody knows the exact number, but believes most LLM training researchers would quote a much lower compute requirement than commonly cited estimates.
