1337 Labs Launches Clanker Safety Institute to Audit Frontier AI After Pace Pledge
tensorqt · x · 2026-09-15
After Dario Amodei's "We Must Pace the Frontier" essay and Anthropic's pledge to give independent evaluators employee-like access — matched by Sam Altman for OpenAI — 1337 Labs has launched the Clanker Safety Institute (CSI), an independent auditor of frontier AI systems.
- Scope: covers both the training/eval/deployment infrastructure and the models' capabilities, safety behavior, and interpretability
- Stance: "pro-progress, pro-safety, pro-evidence" — explicitly anti-doomer, treating safety failures as engineering problems with root causes and fixes rather than five-alarm fires
- Timing: the industry agreed within a weekend that outside evaluators should be inside the building, and CSI is built to consume exactly that access
Note: the branding and dates (2026) carry an obvious meme flavor ("Clanker" is an AI-circle joke), and its AI-optimist safety line is itself a position statement in the current safety debate.
