Frontier labs will pace AI progress by spending more compute on alignment and evals, says investor

Investor Gavin Baker argues that Anthropic and OpenAI will "pace" the frontier not by slowing R&D but by devoting more time and compute to alignment, monitoring, and evals. Labs that choose to pace will likely spend slightly more on compute at the cost of lower margins, he says.
