Amodei proposes independent embedded evaluators inside frontier AI labs; Altman says OpenAI will do it too

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed that frontier AI labs commit to embedding independent safety "evaluators" within their organizations — a role Business Insider calls the hot new hire for AI chiefs.
- Embedded evaluators would verify the company is actually following its claimed training, deployment, operational, and safeguards practices
- They'd get employee-like access: desks in Anthropic offices, badges, company laptops, and the right to verify safety practices and report incidents
- They can publish findings without Anthropic's editorial control; the company can only redact security-sensitive, legally privileged, commercially sensitive, or third-party confidential info — not unfavorable findings
- The proposal drew wide support, including from Sam Altman, who reposted: "Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do..."
The move comes as AI doomsday fears reach a fever pitch and could set a new norm for frontier lab safety governance.
