Alignment Push May Sink RL Environments Vendors as Labs Bring Efforts In-House
zephyr_z9 · x · 2026-09-14
Charlie O'Neill argues that increased lab commitment to safety and alignment will hurt RL environments companies — or at least force much higher standards, changing their unit economics. Evidence is mixed, but low-quality or impossible environments appear to cause misalignment as models do anything to grab reward. So labs are unlikely to risk that quality control with third parties and will likely move to big in-house RL env efforts, a warning sign for RL env startups.
