Researchers mined 1.2M US STEM dissertations to map scientific human capital production

A forthcoming Research Policy paper by Daniel Gross, D. Shvadron, Hansen Zhang and Lee Fleming reads 1.2 million US STEM PhD dissertations from 1950–2022 to measure the scientific training ecosystem: where expertise is embodied, who trains grads in critical technologies, and who funds them. The authors say this is only the start of what the dataset enables.
