What AI Engineering actually means: SWE skills applied to shipping ML models
ashishllm · x · 2026-09-14
A practitioner explains what AI Engineering really is: essentially software engineering in the AI field. DevOps becomes MLOps with many overlapping tools. The job is taking an ML/LLM model and deploying it, building pipelines, hosting on cloud servers, and handling concurrent loads. You need infrastructure knowledge (GPU/CPU/RAM) and MLOps concepts like model rollback, versioning, shadow deployment, GPU utilization, and model drift. Unlike AI researchers, who need deep math, AI engineers take researchers' models and put them into production.
