OpenAI confirms Custom GPTs retirement, recommends Plugins as replacement
Longjumping_Log9999 · reddit · 2026-09-14
OpenAI has officially documented that Custom GPTs are being retired, with Plugins recommended as the replacement. Migration begins September 17, with Enterprise workspaces retiring around December 11.
Key migration details:
- GPT instructions can become a skill inside a Plugin
- Connected apps carry over as apps
- Custom actions do not migrate automatically
OpenAI warns migrated Plugins may behave differently and should be tested against existing workflows, so users with complex setups may not get a one-click replacement.
