Playing GeoGuessr against DeepSeek 4.1 Flash: it's fairly good at geolocation

The author spent the weekend playing GeoGuessr against DeepSeek 4.1 Flash via geoguessr.neuralnoise.com, an open web game, and found the model "fairly good" at geolocating street-level photos.

The game uses Panoramax imagery and OpenStreetMap: each round, human and VLM view the same photo and drop a pin, scoring up to 5,000 points based on distance. The AI offers two modes — Fast (answers in 15 seconds) and Deep thinking (step-by-step reasoning taking several minutes per round).
