Analysis of 15,000 founders finds the 'Outlier Quotient' predicts startup success best
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-09-14
Investor Adam Shuaib shares a lesson from 15 years of investing: truly exceptional founders have an impossible-to-fake trait — deeply unconventional lives.
His team analyzed 15,000 founders using five binary signals: quirky hobbies, early-life exceptionalism, extreme life pivots, unusual geographies, and non-linear careers. These sum into a 0-5 'Outlier Quotient' (OQ) measuring deviation from the mean.
In a 70-factor founder prediction model, OQ was the single most predictive variable — nearly uncorrelated with elite employers or universities. The best founders don't present, think, or build like everyone else.
