GPT-6 Astra: 1M-token context, 2.5x price, and a 'Critical' cyber risk rating

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3 (limited rollout, then paid ChatGPT users next day). Greg Brockman says it 'may be looked back on as the AGI moment' — here's what's confirmed vs. opinion.
Confirmed
- 1.05M-token context, 128K max output, text + image input, knowledge cutoff late April 2026
- API pricing: $10/M input, $50/M output tokens — about 2.5x the previous model
- OpenAI's largest training run ever: first pretraining on 100,000+ GPUs at the Stargate site in Texas
- Internal benchmarks claim it beats the old model and Claude Fable 5 on reasoning with far less hallucination — self-graded, awaiting third-party verification
- OpenAI's own safety card rates Astra 'Critical' for cybersecurity risk: it could meaningfully assist real attacks. The public version refuses certain exploit-building tasks; a less-restricted version is gated to vetted orgs via the 'Daybreak' program
Opinion, not announcement
- Brockman framed the AGI claim as personal opinion; OpenAI hasn't formally declared AGI, and its old definition (doing all economically valuable work as well as a human) isn't met by benchmark wins
Bottom line: a real capability jump, especially on cyber and agent tasks, at a much higher price — but the AGI framing is messier than headlines suggest.
