New Paper Finds Retrieval Signals Give No Reliable Routing Gain in Adaptive Multimodal RAG

A new arXiv paper, Beyond the Query, tests a common assumption in adaptive multimodal RAG: whether retrieval-time signals help routers decide when to retrieve again, rerank, or run multimodal steps.
- Experiments span document, audio, and video RAG, comparing matched query-only vs query+retrieval routers while holding optional actions, router family, training, and evaluation fixed
- On held-out final evaluation, adding the tested retrieval signals yields no reliable routing improvement over the query-only baseline
- Some signals correlate with whether a later step helps, but that predictability doesn't consistently translate into better RUN/SKIP decisions
The key lesson is methodological: retrieval-state features shouldn't be credited with routing value unless they beat a matched query-only control.
