David Sacks Tells Frontier Labs: Slow Down If You Must, But Skip the Permission Theater
Kyrannio · x · 2026-09-14
David Sacks publicly responds to Dario Amodei's "pace the frontier" call, which Sam Altman endorsed. His verdict: by market share, revenue growth, and capability, OpenAI and Anthropic are a duopoly on frontier intelligence, and they claim recursive self-improvement is widening the lead.
Sacks says he can't see inside the labs—if unreleased models are scary enough to justify slowing down, he supports acting responsibly. But he draws hard lines: stop pretending you need anyone's permission, stop claiming antitrust law must be suspended to form a cartel, and stop demanding regulatory approval. Effectively, he hands labs the legitimacy to self-throttle while warning against safety as a cover for monopoly.
