ACX's weekly open thread rounds up a fast-moving moment for AI safety:
- Frontier pact: Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Demis Hassabis, and Elon Musk have agreed to "pace the frontier" of AI, with Dario's essay as the starting point for a concrete plan.
- Project Tailwind: Coefficient Giving (formerly Open Philanthropy) is recruiting founders for ambitious AI safety initiatives, offering up to $2M pre-seed and up to $20M seed funding.
- Mathematicians wanted: Fields Medalist Jacob Tsimerman is founding the Mathematical AI Safety Institute, hiring 10-30 mathematicians in the Bay Area by January, scaling to 30-100 by September 2027.
- Employee organizing: Pamela Mishkin launched the Coalition Of Concerned AI Staff to hold CEOs to their commitments; Cassie Pritchard is organizing a safety-focused labor union.
- For everyone else: Scott Alexander lists routes including contacting representatives, joining PauseAI (Global and USA recently split acrimoniously), signing MIRI's 100,000-signature assurance contract, small-dollar donations, 80,000 Hours career support, and local ACX/EA meetups.
