Open-source map tool OH3 adds instant browser-side viewshed analysis for anywhere in Japan
AI_Andrew · x · 2026-09-14
The Japanese open-source project OH3 (open-hinata3) shipped a new viewshed analysis feature: click any spot on the map and it paints terrain-visible areas green and blocked areas gray, with a draggable marker to move the viewpoint.
- Eye heights from 1.6m up to a 100m tower, analysis radius 500m-10km, targets at ground/person/building heights
- Outputs visible area, visibility ratio, and farthest visible point; results are shareable via URL
- All computation runs in-browser from elevation tiles — 1-2 seconds anywhere in the country, with earth-curvature and atmospheric refraction corrections
- Caveat: based only on 5-10m DEM terrain, so buildings and trees aren't considered
Use cases include viewpoint scouting, camera placement, radio line-of-sight, and landscape assessment.
