PDE researchers say OpenAI's Navier-Stokes blow-up proof inverts how humans learn math

Mathematician Scott Armstrong calls OpenAI's construction of a Navier-Stokes blow-up a huge contribution to PDE theory, saying it may take analysts weeks to a month to fully understand — potentially breaking a bottleneck stuck since Leray a century ago. Soumitra Shukla adds that learning structures are now inverted: instead of proofs emerging after incremental understanding, AI delivers the result first and humans work backward to build deeper connections, yielding roughly the same learning in reverse. Human understanding, he argues, will typically lag proofs from now on.
