AI Czar David Sacks backs frontier slowdown but tells OpenAI and Anthropic to drop the regulation pretexts

White House AI czar David Sacks responded on X to Dario Amodei's call to "pace the frontier," which Sam Altman has endorsed. Surprisingly, Sacks says he supports it: if unreleased models are scary enough, slowing down is the responsible move.
But he pushes back on the framing: by market share, revenue growth, and model capability, OpenAI and Anthropic already hold a duopoly on frontier intelligence and claim a widening lead via recursive self-improvement. So they should stop pretending they need anyone's permission, stop invoking antitrust exemptions to form a cartel, and stop hiding behind regulatory pretexts.
