OpenAI ships Images 2.5 with steadier local edits, 50% faster generation

OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.5, saying users now generate over 3 billion images weekly via ChatGPT Images and the GPT-Image API.
Key upgrades
- Precise local editing: changing a person, product or background is more likely to touch only the specified area, with official demos like "full-body edits" and a "multi-city travel ticket"
- Multi-turn consistency: earlier edits survive subsequent modifications better, though animator @genelai found jagged edges and texture drift still appear after many stacked edits
- Reference-image fidelity: better preservation of identity features when placing people/pets in new scenes, plus improved lighting and texture
- Speed: up to 50% faster than Images 2.0
New features: Sketch (draw a rough draft in ChatGPT, invoke with @Sketch), Templates (Poster, Merch), and shareable image Prompts.
API: GPT-Image-2.5 Flare (default, 50% lower latency, aimed at social content and rapid prototyping) and Sunburst (slower, finer control for ad-grade assets).
Third-party results are mixed: fashion founder Yana Welinder saw clear improvements, while engineer Mark Kretschmann found Images 2.0 more photorealistic in his forest-scene tests. Images 2.5 is live for ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex users, with C2PA metadata and invisible watermarking retained.
