Following up his prediction of open-source regulation, tszzl argues the question is basically irrelevant: a model doesn't need open weights to drive lab margins to zero. DeepSeek could partner with Amazon cloud to offer ZDR service in the US while staying closed, at a tenth the cost of Claude. His conclusion: open source is a hobby horse — the real commercial threat is cheap closed models, not open weights.
