Dario Amodei calls to pace AI frontier; Anthropic grants METR employee-level access

Dario Amodei published a new essay, "We Must Pace the Frontier," arguing the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan; Anthropic unilaterally commits to the first step: permanent, employee-level system access for third-party evaluators like METR to verify safety measures, report incidents, and assess alignment during training.
Former Anthropic safety researcher Eric Steinberger went further in a quote-post:
- Permanent employee-level access for independent evaluators should be legally required; they'll offer METR access before it's mandated
- Slow capabilities AND accelerate alignment research; right incentives could redirect labs' capabilities programs toward alignment
- Non-disclosure of incidents should eventually carry the same severity as nuclear safety law violations
- It must be global: no trust needed for a mutually beneficial verifiable treaty — extend a hand to China
- Frontier researchers should work on alignment now
