MIT report: 46% of undergrads use LLMs daily, 90% worry about overreliance

An MIT Ad Hoc Committee of faculty, students, and staff spent five months studying generative AI's impact on campus and produced a blunt warning to universities everywhere.
Key findings:
- 46% of surveyed MIT undergrads use LLMs daily; 90% worry about their own overreliance;
- Study groups and office hours are emptying; written problem sets and take-home exams no longer prove mastery;
- Heavy chatbot reliance erodes confidence and skills — what the report calls "cognitive surrender."
The committee rejected surveillance-based responses: AI detectors are unreliable, lockdown browsers feel like spying, and policing breeds mutual distrust. Instead it proposes rebuilding education around what AI can't replace — oral exams, semester portfolios, in-person projects, a required social component in every course, and rethinking grades entirely, since without a GPA to optimize much of the cheating incentive evaporates. It also warns professors against swapping undergrad research assistants for cheaper AI agents: universities exist to grow people, not output.
