David Deutsch fixed his dishwasher with ChatGPT — and argues AI-created wealth is invisible to GDP

Oxford physicist David Deutsch posted that he was about to order a new dishwasher, but ChatGPT helped him repair the old one instead. His point: such repairs increase real national wealth while decreasing measured GDP, because the headline economic indicator is structurally incapable of registering what actually makes people better off — the growth of knowledge.
The economist sharing the post extends the argument: GDP was designed for a coal-and-steel economy of easily measurable quantities and worked well for decades, but IT, the internet, and AI have changed the landscape. His favorite example: around 2010, getting recent Spanish-language books on economic history in the U.S. was expensive and slow (he carried an empty bag to Madrid and filled it), until the Kindle arrived — one of many real improvements GDP never captures.
