NYU professor Kyunghyun Cho writes about redesigning his <Fundamentals of Machine Learning> course, first taught pre-pandemic in 2020 as <Introduction to Machine Learning>. An informal survey found most graduating CS students had never tried coding assistants, despite heading into software/data engineering jobs. His conviction: students must be allowed to make and learn from mistakes at school, not at work. The revamped course has two goals — teach the math/statistics fundamentals and how they materialize as ML algorithms without deep implementation details, and let students feel the process from fundamentals onward.
