Dario Amodei Calls For Pacing The Frontier; Turing Winner Patterson Fires Back

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a new essay, "We Must Pace the Frontier," arguing the AI industry should slow down and laying out a three-part plan. As the first step, Anthropic is unilaterally committing to give third-party evaluators permanent, employee-level access to its systems, so they can verify adherence to safety measures, report incidents, and assess alignment during training.
Turing Award winner David Patterson publicly pushed back, saying "Dario is wrong as usual" and that we must accelerate AI development — slowing it down prevents good, which is the same as causing harm. The accelerate-vs-pause divide is once again out in the open.
