Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a new essay, "We Must Pace the Frontier," arguing the AI industry should deliberately slow down and laying out a three-part plan. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first step: granting third-party evaluators permanent, employee-level access to its systems so they can verify safety measures, report incidents, and assess model alignment during training. Quoting the essay, Vamsi Kurama partially agrees, noting humanity has overcome seemingly impossible crises before—deadly virus outbreaks, economic crashes, dangerous radiation—and argues that whether "it's different this time" remains debatable; the focus should be on understanding the systems and getting them right rather than assuming control is impossible.
