Silent data corruptions will get worse over the next decade, warns security researcher

Security researcher lauriewired argues that rising density, lower voltage gating, and raw scale are making silent data corruptions (SDCs) a serious issue for the next decade, and computing will become unreliable again. He suggests CS students write theses on SDCs and algorithmic fault tolerance, notes DOE HPC teams deliberately irradiate Nvidia GPUs to quantify error rates, and recalls Alan Turing telling programmers to check that sin²θ + cos²θ ≈ 1 on the flaky Ferranti Mark I.
