Dario Amodei lays out three-part plan to slow frontier AI; Anthropic opens systems to third-party evaluators
JessicaHullman · x · 2026-09-12
Dario Amodei published "We Must Pace the Frontier," arguing the AI industry should slow down with a three-part plan. Anthropic unilaterally commits to the first step: granting third-party evaluators permanent, employee-level access to verify safety measures, report incidents, and assess alignment during training.
Safety researcher Joshua Saxe called the essay sensible but flagged key open questions: evaluator independence and selection, whether they hold non-revokable authority to block launches, whether decisions draw on real-world risk signals balanced against AI's benefits, and whether US and Chinese frontier labs adopt the same practices without defecting.
