EMS responds to OpenAI's Navier–Stokes claim, flags authorship and closed-model concerns

The European Mathematical Society has issued an official statement on OpenAI's announcement of a solution to the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, calling it a milestone in the history of mathematics.
- Standing on giants: EMS notes the solution builds directly on strategies proposed by mathematicians Diego Córdoba, Luis Martínez-Zoroa, and Fan Zheng, plus recent progress by Levent Alpöge (Anthropic) and Tristan Buckmaster (NYU), all resting on decades of prior work.
- Human–AI authorship: The paper is authored by OpenAI but acknowledges mathematicians and AI models worked together; EMS says authorship and credit in this new paradigm need to be resolved.
- Open access worry: The model used is internal to OpenAI and not generally accessible — EMS flags this as a major problem for open science and equal opportunity.
Signed by EMS leadership including president Jan Philip Solovej, the statement closes with admiration and celebration of the achievement despite these concerns.
